Social representations of the thesis based on memes
Abstract
The objective of this article is to analyze the social representations associated with the process
of elaboration of a thesis, expressed in the memes published in the social networks. The theory
of social representations was considered from the approaches of Moscovici (1979), Abric (2001)
among others; as well as the notion of discursive gender (Swales (1990; 2004) for the study of
the thesis as a text that is elaborated with the communicative purpose of demonstrating
knowledge before a disciplinary community, under the supervision of a tutor and in agreement
with the norms that govern the production of knowledge in a specialty. Methodologically, it
corresponds to a documentary study. The corpus is made up of one hundred (100) static memes,
chosen under the following criteria: associated with the process of preparing a thesis, written in
Spanish, generic, without mentioning any public figure, and constructed with a variety of
resources (rhetorical, humorous, types of images). To analyze them, the texts of the meme were transcribed into a data matrix and then placed in some process, linked to the elaboration of the thesis. In conjunction with the analysis of the image, the following categories were derived that account for the social representations: (a) The thesis is a difficult and endless event, (b) The tutorial relationship is conflictive, (c) The thesis cancels out family and social life, (d) The support of the thesis is an act of intimidation, and (e) The presentation of the thesis is an act of liberation. Among the conclusions, it should be noted that in the social representations underlying memes, the thesis is a goal that can only be achieved if there is pain, anguish and suffering involved. These results raise the need to revise the way in which university institutions have oriented the development of theses in undergraduate and graduate studies.
